Meet Zack and Joey:
___
____
They’re pretty cool.
____
____
Zack, Joey, and Adam are our resident Parkour Enthusiasts.
[Click here for a description of Parkour]
If you haven’t noticed, Adam is missing in this trio today, making this post about only 2 of our Parkour Heros:
____

____
Zack and Joey!
Oh wait, we’ve been over this.
Moving on…
____
____
We were at the Children’s Park for the end-of-the-year field day with the Homeschool Coop
when the boys found some very beautiful, very fake grass,
Perfect for some Parkour practice!
____
____
I like these guys a lot.
Sometimes they’re goofy…
____

____
but they’re also serious.
I see them pause, check distance and make plans in their heads.
They’re determined
even though flipping and jumping goes hand-in-hand with falling, twisting, and scraping.
____

____
I love watching them transform this city into a jungle gym,
(yep, just like Jack Johnson!)
climbing containers, leaping fences, tumbling from ledges and swinging on, over and under bars of all sorts.
____
____
But even though these guys are fun, lively, and entertaining, they are more than that.
They love this sport,
but it’s not all about them.
They share it.
How many 15 year old boys do you know that invite their older sisters and dorky youth leader (me) along to learn parkour?
____

____
Truthfully, the reason you don’t see any pictures of ME doing parkour is because I haven’t yet been brave enough to try it, but that doesn’t mean I haven’t been tempted! If anyone could get me to try it though, it would be these boys.
They’re good teachers, too.
Molly, Sarah, Sue and Elise were hopping over low fences after a short lesson with the guys on our retreat,
and looking pretty cool doing it too.
____

____
“They love us!”
Zach dramatically hollered down to me from on top of a shipping container the other day,
referring to the flock of 11 and 12 year old boys climbing up after them.
____
____
“Of course they do!” I shouted back.
These guys are leaders. Role models.
They are inclusive and encouraging with others while still challenging themselves
and going hard at the things they love and
I think
____

____
that that
is pretty awesome.

🙂 Fun photos. Nicholas and his friends were really into parkour at around that same age. It seems to require a particular brand of foolish fearlessness that teen boys are brim full of. Now he climbs cliffs and frozen waterfalls, which is more calculated, and less joyful than parkour is.
Yep, foolish fearlessness is a good way to put it! I’ve got the foolish part down pat, but we’ve got to work on the fearless before getting to the parkour part, let alone cliffs and waterfalls…haha.
Thanks for stopping by! Hope the book is going well!
